A 6.30am pick up by The Crabby Cabby to run us back out to Crawford Dr. After a 10km hike along the escarpment on a fabulous cool & dry morning we came to the old Coran ruins and then the “Spiral Staircase”, a fabulous structure of about 10m to get us part way down the scarp followed by a very rocky scramble down to the bay side. Along the entire route there are clumps of Poison Ivy hiding in amongst the vegetation just waiting to sneak attack you. There was even some lurking right on the handrail as you dodged over the rocky descent. With the weather drying and warming up, the trail just keeps improving with noticeably better footing. This lets us actually look up from time to time and take in the surroundings. Walking with only light weight day packs and in this wonderful weather sure makes it a very pleasant experience. Walking over the rocky escarpment terrain with full packs is body pounding and both of us have little niggles creeping in that we need to take care of. Yay for ROC tape it is magic stuff.
Our walk took us along the bay under the Spirit rock and into the outskirts of town. After a bit of a ramble through the town we re-joined the trail for a 3.4 km walk along the scarp again before rejoining the road for a 2.4 km amble. The road was lined with Hawthorn, Pear trees, Crab Apples and Walnut trees. At the end of the bitumen road the trail goes bush again with a short 1km walk before we descended to our arranged pickup point at the Bruce Caves car park.
We decided to do a bit of the tourist thing and walk the 400m to the Bruce Caves, named after a Scotsman named Robert Bruce who lived there before building himself a House nearby. Go figure a Scotsman named Robert Bruce living in a cave, just like the original all he needed was a spider to complete the story.
We were back in town for a decent lunch and stopped in to the Green Door, which was fabulous and very popular as we had to make a reservation before we could be fed.
As if we had not done enough walking we decided to walk back to our Motel located 2km from town.
