If the length of the queue to get a seat in this pizza restaurant is anything to go by then by popular vote this must be the best pizza joint in Cannes if not the best restaurant. It is located right next to the old harbour on Quai Saint-Pierre near the old town and also offers B&B rooms and apartments upstairs. The building is a large land building over 4 floors and sits along a promenade near the old harbour next to many other more expensive fish restaurants. I arrived around 8 in the evening and the queue was already 10 people long and growing by the minute but it only took me about 15 minutes to get a seat.
The turnaround of guests is fast and I didn’t feel that I wanted to stay too long so ordered the pepperoni pizza and a salad expecting it to arrive in seconds, in fact it took a little while to arrive. I sat outside with the view of the pretentious boats in the old harbour, some with their owners sitting aft sipping champagne as they looked across at us in the pizza restaurant. I was sat right next to a window with a view inside of the restaurant which had huge number of seats and tables, the window also looked directly at the pizza oven where I could see a cook tossing pizza dough in the air making the bases, and another cook was slopping the toppings on the bases before putting them in the oven. The warm weather outside and the heat from the open flame of the pizza oven made created a great atmosphere, so when my pizza arrived I was ready for something special.
The pizza looked impressive and was indeed huge but it was only a half a 12 inch pizza but more than enough for me. I wasn’t sure whether the plate was too small or the pizza too large but the fact was it looked daunting, I couldn’t help thinking that is exactly the feeling one should have about a good pizza. The topping was thick with a deep layer of pepperoni on top of a viscous tomato layer; on top of all that was an even thicker layer of cheese. The dough tasted delicious and was fresh and light. Although the topping was plentiful I did feel it was not offering much taste other than greasy cheese and pepperoni and I wished it had had some herbs on the top to balance the grease and fat. However, the salad was disappointing and seemed to be an afterthought with just a few tomatoes and some lettuce leaves. Nevertheless, I quite enjoyed it but did want to stay too long in case the buzz of this place made me too agitated and restless, so as soon as my plate was empty except for some chewed pizza rims, I was off somewhere else for a quiet drink.
