A great day trip which you get to by taking a long 6km cable car ride across the Lantau Island and over the sea to reach Ngong village which is a Disney style remake of a traditional village. There is a real functioning monastery next to it with the star attraction, the giant Buddha. The biggest Buddha in the world!

What I experienced here
There is a fabulous 35 min cable car ride all the way up to Ngong village. Amazing views as it traverses valleys and hills all the way up to Ngong village, it evens crosses the sea with views of the South China Sea the journey takes about 25 minutes and covers around 6 km. Ngong village is a Disney style remake of a traditional village filled with souvenir shops. Walk through this and you emerge into big square across which you will find the Po Lin monastery with a nice vegetarian restaurant. On the other side is a large stair case leading to the Tian Tan Giant Buddha – the largest Buddha in the word!
We took the bus instead of the cable car to ascend to the monastery which took a lot longer than the cable car. We then visited the monastery and then went to the see the Buddha. We spent a little time in the shops in Ngong village but didn’t stay too long and descended by the cable care.
Disappointed we did not arrive earlier and taken the cable car up as well down. We would have saved more time and had longer in Ngong village
The Giant Buddha and Ngong village are all in one location which we did not understand from the tourist literature, we actually thought they were located in completely different places.
Tip; Take the cable car up and back down to Ngong village and giant Buddha. It is much quicker and more comfortable than by bus.
