We last visited Sterling in about 1977 when I did a summer school with the OU at Sterling University while Neal and Sandy were to enjoy a weeks camping and touring. It rained then as well. The camp site was flooded, some tents found flying was a fun pastime. Sandy and Neal found refuge in my college room.
In '77 we visited the castle and enjoyed the lone piper's lament from the battlements. The town was quiet and interesting, though I don't remember all the details.
In 2005 the town was not recognisable. Concrete blocks of Boots and BHS had replaced or overshadowed the charm of the place. We ate in an insipid plastic and burger fast food joint and made our getaway.
